A Place Called Home
A Place Called Home was founded in May of 1993 by Debrah Constance. It was created to give gang-affected youth in the inner-city a place where they could come after school, get a snack, do their homework, play with their friends, and be with people who care about them -- basic rights that all kids should have, but that few kids in South Central Los Angeles are privileged to have. From this fundamental concept, APCH grew at an exponential rate and now provides kids with many services, including an all day school in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District and an employment readiness and placement program with the help of LA Youth at Work.
Here is an excerpt from one of Arianna's columns about A Place Called Home:
"In a precinct that reported 134 robberies, 11 homicides, 134 felony assaults and 10 attempted murders in a recent month, A Place Called Home is equipped to handle as many as a thousand children. There is no government funding involved -- just dedicated citizens giving their own time and money. And of course, there is Debrah. Walking with her through the maze of bustling rooms, it was clear she had found her mission."
